Story: Spirits' Journey
Fandom: Spirited Away
Genre: Drama, Continuation
Summary: It has been years after Chihiro leaves the Spirit World, can she find resolution?
Squeeing: This is a very satisfying, long oneshot that follows Chihiro's journey from an outsider perspective that may or may not be Haku's. Lots of attention to detail and setting was done by the writer, and I think this may be one of my fav Spirited Away fics now - it's different than what I'm used to seeing.
Excerpt: The first time I ran into the woman, I was too young to realize how absolutely crazy the woman was.
Story: Big Brother is Here
Author: Abby Ebon
Genre: Drama, Crossover, Sci-Fi
Summary: AU. Hell didn't let Dean go. After Earth was abandoned by a tech-prosperous humanity; demons laid claim to it. Sam didn't have the heart to fight. Sam fled, a passenger of Yokohama; to Pern, third planet of the sun Rukbat in the Sagittarian Sector.
Squeeing: Abby Ebon seems to specialize in WTF-xovers, and somehow makes them work. This is nothing I ever considered, but somehow the idea of Sam ending up as one of the original Pernese colonists works. The worlds are merged together neatly, and the payoff is enjoyable.
Excerpt: It would take fifteen years, in deep sleep, it wouldn’t matter that he hadn’t aged. He was one of six thousand colonists, after all. Sam had signed on as a far-explorer, an observer and sample collector, with little more then his own two legs, a traveling tent, and a wide-range radio, he would be out of sight; out of mind.

Story: Rikkaidai’s Special Team Bonding
Fandom: Prince of Tennis
punishes Rikkaidai for losing at Regionals
spends a day out with all his friends. Sanada is too smitten to care which option is true.
Squeeing: Cheerful evil, thy name is Yukimura. issen4
pointed this one out to me, since I've not been reading Tenipuri lately. This fic has a sly sense of humor, and Sanada's reaction to everything Yukimura does is downright hysterical. So much fun.
Excerpt: At this point, Sanada experienced a certain, almost-Pavlovian dysfunction that he suffered from. It went like this:
Yukimura pretty! Yukimura smiling! Quick, say yes to whatever it is! “Sure,” Sanada sighed dreamily, even though it was only six in the morning and practice wouldn’t start for hours yet.
Story: Tied to the Train Tracks
Summary: Puck dreams of verbal abuse.
Squeeing: So, I love the Puck/Kurt side of Glee fandom, since it seems to be pretty clever. I very much like pieces that recognize that Puck/Kurt is kind of a not-healthy relationship... and has the two of them playing off each other in a snarky way. This delivers that.
Excerpt: For the sake of the club and their friends they put a permanent stop to all the cursing of relatives and firstborns and all the detailed backtalk about retarded hair that offended all five senses and homosexual hair that brutally violated all five senses. It was, strangely enough, quite a loss.
Story: Sure Thing, Mr Schue
Author: cruiscin lan
Pairing/Character: Quinn, Will
Summary: When Quinn's secret comes to light, she feels like the whole world hates her, but fortunately she finds support from someone she'd never have expected it from.
Squeeing: This story was written prior to the final ep of the fall season, but I still adore it - it's got a Quinn and Will I really like. It manages to stay gen (which I also liked), while showing how another type of important relationship can be developed. A very well-told second person tale.
Excerpt: "Quinn, I'm so sorry," he says, but you're not sure why he's the one apologizing. "Do you need a ride home?"
The question takes you off-guard, and before you can think, you can hear yourself saying "I don't really have one."
"A ride?" Mr. Schue asks. "Or a home?"
Suddenly you can't stop crying.
Story: This Is The Morning
Pairing/Character: Buffy, Peter
Summary: “I have come home at last! This is my real country! I belong here.”
Squeeing: Buffy meets the joy of living in Aslan's "real world." I never would have thought of this concept, but it works.
Excerpt: She was dead.
After the first shock, she had been too happy to care, much. She hadn’t expected that. Having spent most of her life dealing with the reality of Hell, the possibility of Heaven wasn’t one she’d thought much about.
Story: Oh God Not Again!
Fandom: Harry Potter
Summary: So maybe everything didn't work out perfectly for Harry. Still, most of his friends survived, he'd gotten married, and was about to become a father. If only he'd have stayed away from the Veil, he wouldn't have had to go back and do everything AGAIN.
Squeeing: This fic sent me into delighted giggles every time a new section came out. This fic is part-parody of "Harry Travels Back In Time" cliches, along with a healthy dose of cynicism toward the HPverse as a whole. Lots of really fun scenes and it's a wild romp which fixes most
of what goes bad in very ironic ways.
Excerpt: Oh boy. This was going to be a LONG seven years.
Genre: Drama/Character Study
Summary: The mask he wears took years to create.
Squeeing: A really good character study of what made Byakuya change from the fiery kid in TBTP to the stoic captain we first meet. This feels like canon
, and explains a heck of a lot.
Excerpt: “Byakuya,” Grandfather said, kneeling beside him and placing a large hand on his tiny shoulder. “I know it hurts, but we must be strong. One day you will be the Head of the Kuchiki clan, and they must know that you are able to lead them.”
Story: The Black Spider
Fandom: The Chronicles of Narnia
Pairing/Character: Edmund, Lucy, Peter
Summary: It was common knowledge that King Edmund was the Black Spider, the greatest spymaster in Narnia. Which is why the Governor of the Lone Islands had good reason to be nervous.
Squeeing: A nicely written short that explores the now-standard Edmund-the-Spymaster Narnian plot device. Very well drawn and inventively told.
Excerpt: King Edmund of Narnia, called the Just, was as dark as his sister was golden, the shadow to her sunlight. It was well-known among intelligence circles that this dark, dour king was not to be taken lightly. The Black Spider, he was called among spies from Calormen to the Lone Islands to Ettinsmoor.
Story: Deus ex Machina
Author: Lady Azar de Tameran
Fandom: Star Trek Reboot
Genre: AU, "fix-it"
Summary: The Enterprise doesn’t escape the Narada’s black hole, and like dominoes falling one after another, the future is rewritten. Yet again.
Squeeing: This is one of those fics I can't comment on without utterly spoiling. All I can say is my reaction is oh hell yes.
And that this is the best use of the rather standard "deus ex machina" title I've seen in ages.
Excerpt: They’re being dragged in, and the warp core is somehow refusing to eject. And there is absolutely nothing Jim can do as he and Spock the younger stand together and stare out at the sight before them in absolute horror. As his eyes drift to all the terrified but somehow still resolute expressions around him. Chekov and Sulu and Uhura and all the others. All of them frightened but stoic in the face of certain doom.
Story: Cord of Life
Genre: Angst, Drama, Divergence
Summary: When Sasuke finally offers to return to Konoha, Naruto turns him away. Picks up post-Itachi/Sasuke battle.
Squeeing: I tend to like Sasuke/Naruto which is about the crack, but sometimes I want to see something that focuses on the ties that bind them - and this piece delivers. If, for some reason Naruto ever decided Sasuke wasn't worth it, that doesn't mean Sasuke would also let go. This is an angsty fic, but told well.
Excerpt: “Naruto is done with you, Sasuke-kun,” her voice doesn’t tremble, but her fingers do shake. “He won’t be chasing after you any longer. I think it’s about time he stop. He’s already given so much, and you’ve already shown how much you aren’t worth it.”
Story: Dedicated Follower of Fashion
Fandom: Glee/High School Musical
Genre: Crossover, Future Fic
Pairing/Character: Kurt/Puck, Ryan/Chad
Summary: Dear Kurt Hummel, it is with Glee and Cheer that we invite you to share a special day in our lives and join us for the Class Reunion of McKinley High for the year 2011!
Squeeing: There are no words to express my delight in this - Kurt and Ryan as roommates as Kurt is invited for his 10 year class reunion. Ryan and Kurt play off of each other brilliantly
, and the author's characterization of both is hysterically funny. I so want more xovers featuring these two together.
Excerpt: And then, the day before the big reunion, Kurt comes home from work to find packed bags in the hallway with a smug Ryan and an apologetic Chad. "I am an innocent bystander in all of this," Chad says, before Kurt can say anything, and Kurt sighs. He doesn't doubt it. Ryan can be one of the sneakiest people Kurt knows, where sometimes he seems to surprise even himself with the result -- even if the result is exactly what he wanted.
Story: From the Ashes
Fandom: Gundam Wing
Genre: Drama, Dark
Pairing/Character: Trowa, Dorothy
Summary: Trowa is called out to investigate an assault at the L4 embassy and discovers a former enemy.
Squeeing: Merith writes about a very touchy topic (the aftermath of rape) without getting graphic. Both Trowa and Dorothy are brilliant in here; there's no hint of romance, but there is a connection between the two... the fic takes an overused fandom plot and breathes new life into it.
Excerpt: At the sound of his voice, she turned her head, and Trowa hid the sudden shock. Nearly swollen shut, her left eye was blackened, its bruise in vivid contrast to her pale coloring. Her mouth with its generous lips hadn’t escaped injury; the upper lip split and swelled, the bruising equally as obvious.
“Why are you here?” Her voice was hoarse and raspy, and it was then that he saw the purple and blue marks dotting her throat.
Story: Smile When You're Confused
Genre: Humor, Friendship
Pairing/Character: Sai, Lee, Gaara
Summary: Sai's kind of an idiot, but he means well. Sai-centric. Gen. Gaara and Lee for extra flair.
Squeeing: The author calls this crack, but it really doesn't feel like it. Sai's social ineptness is done perfectly
here. The writing is simple, but it works well for Sai's cluelessness.
Excerpt: The Kazekage was in town, which meant only one thing for Sai: a chance to make a new friend.
Story: A Beautiful(ly Illogical) Mind
Fandom: Star Trek
Genre: Romance, Divergence
Summary: Jim never takes up Pike's dare to do better
Squeeing: This is a fabulous divergence fic which really captures the essence of Kirk. It's the first in a longer series showing how NuTrek's Spock and Kirk might interact if they met outside of the Academy, but also catches the inevitability of them. The sequels are awesome, too, telling stories from different characters perspectives (my favorite is McCoy's, but Kirk's family is wonderfully done, too).
Excerpt: The answer is √π233/hy7.
Has been for all three months of the first semester. Jim's not sure why the galaxy's best and brightest haven't realized that, but it's not his school, not his problem.
Story: The Case of the Hidden Epidemic
Author: Mirror and Image
Fandom: Detective Conan
Genre: Epic, mystery
Pairing/Character: Shinichi/Ran, cast
Summary: Conan has, unsurprisingly, stumbled across a mystery. This time, however, the victims are much closer: the students of his elementary school. With Genta and Ayumi hospitalized, Conan will need to solve this case quickly. But then Ran gets hospitalized.
Squeeing: Excellent casefic, with a good mystery and a really horrifying climax. This fic reads like a good mystery novel, with a nice balance between character and plot development.
Excerpt: "Ne, Conan-kun," Mitsuhiko leaned over once they sat back down. "Do you really think they are just sick?"
"Why don't we find out?" he replied.
Story: Magic Sword Pocket Guy
Fandom: Highlander/Harry Potter
Pairing/Character: Methos, Ted Tonks
Summary: Well, they've got to get them from someplace...
Squeeing: An interesting intersection of the HP and HL universes without being "world changing." I like the use of Ted Tonks, a peripheral character in HP, and Methos is perfectly on-key as himself.
Excerpt: "I've got a problem, Ted," said Methos, sans greeting, as he strolled into Ted Tonks's shop as casually as if they'd only seen each other just yesterday and not fifteen years ago.
Story: Life, Revisited
Fandom: High School Musical
Genre: Epic, Angst, Romance
Summary: On Valentine’s Day, 2011, Chad Danforth has a boyfriend who loves him and an almost-happy ending. On September 3, 2008, he’s falling for Ryan Evans. What happens in between, in the opposite direction of normal.
Squeeing: Every now and then, I stumble on a fic which reminds me why I bother with fandom. This fic is a masterpiece - the structure, characterization and eye-to-detail is astonishing. The story reminds me a bit of "The Last Five Years," where we see where a character (Chad) ends up, and then work back from there. It starts out with Chad in a relationship with an OMC, and Ryan dead... then goes back to high school.
It's been a very long time since a fanfic made me cry, but this one did. Highly recommended, although be aware the angst is like WHOA to start, but is somewhat mitigated as the story moves forward (or back, to be more accurate). Very much manages to capture the depth of grief, and the belief that life does go on, but what happened shouldn't be forgotten. Just a stunning, amazing piece of work.
Excerpt: Jesse rubbed his thumb over the ridge of Chad's knuckles, eyes flickering up to meet Chad's. "What was his name?"
"Ryan." Chad looked down at their joined hands. Brown-on-brown--he and Ryan had contrasted so sharply. "Ryan Evans."
Story: Kishimoto's Revenge
Summary: Sixteen years from now, Naruto decides that he finally can't take it anymore.
Squeeing: I think this has just become one of my favorite Naruto fics, EVER. Not only does it mock Kishimoto's tendency to UberSasuke, it also mocks anime fillers. And there's sex, what more can a girl want?
Excerpt: “Megadouche has the uber, super, ultra, shiny, magnificent Sharingan,” Sasuke explained. “I need at least three more arcs, consisting of about sixty issues each, to obtain a counterattack for this ultimate weapon.”
